Another Update: Here the demon name is solved.

Update: See more “Paranormal State” reviews here.

Unfortunately we here at Spectral Review don’t get previews of upcoming paranormal shows so I can’t report on how the new AETV Paranormal State’s first episode is like. Fortunately someone at Blend Television did get a preview.

There are some creepy moments in the episode but it doesn’t look like the goal of the series is to scare the crap out of people. The main focus of the series, based on the first episode, seems to be on the people who have encountered the ghosts and how their lives have been affected by the encounters. While I was watching the episode, I found myself feeling skeptical about the whole ghost thing but at the same time, feeling sympathy for the family that is featured. Whether or not Matthew is really seeing ghosts (and the kid is seriously convincing), this family is going through a really hard time dealing with it. The fact that the PRS was willing to take their problem seriously seemed to have a positive affect on them as a family.

What is going to be interesting to see is if this show is like Ghost Hunters where they will try to disprove a haunting first. Or will they go all bonkers when they see some orbs in photos. According to this review there seems to be evidence that they will be like the Ghost Hunters. We will just have to wait and see how the show evolves over the first season I guess.

  1. [...] For a more positive review see our earlier posting on “Paranormal State” and Ryan Buell and also this posting about the first episode. [...]

  2. Two thumbs down, I’m confident that this group of people are helping these families cope with family issues. The static recorder voice needs to go. This show is fun, however, seems like a group of people trying to make some money and fame off of TV entertainment.

  3. I think the show has promise actually. I haven’t seen the full second episode yet (it’s recorded) but I think the things I don’t like about it is more the style than the substance. I agree the static recorder voice needs to go. I’d rather just have a regular narrator.

Clearly the explosion of paranormal shows on TV nowadays is proof people are trying to make money and fame. I just have a feeling that the Penn State people were not thinking that when they started their group.

So Ronno, will you watch the next new episode?

  5. Since watching the first episode I don’t believe that these kids know anything about what they are trying to sell. So far from my perspective is that this is a series on Ryan Buell’s demon following him. As for what they have provine, they haven’t shown any solid evidence of any type of paranormal activity. They had shown a door open in a basement of a bi-level house, which the walls by the door were cinder blocks with graffiti on them. And if you have actuall video of a door opening why wouldn’t you investigate it ( ex. t.a.p.p.s.). This seems to be a show with a bunch of cheap movie gimmick, like the flashing of words on the screen to try and get you subconsiosly, and the cheap voice over dub. It seems to me that this is more of a religious show and how to deal with problems if you are cathlic. I have found so many problems with this show I could go on all night. I’ll just ad one more obvious problem. I don’t see an ederly lady ( I don’t care who she is) getting up at 5 a.m. and answering her phone, let alone drive to where ever they are and getting there before six am. I feel this show is very fixed and not about the paranormal. Thanks for listening to my two cents

  6. I was thinking the same thing about Lorraine Warren showing up at that time. I’m not that old and I wouldn’t get up that early without a lot of notice!

I’m hoping that the show has enough momentum to fix these things. One of the girls mentioned that it was being filmed last January so they probably have quite a episodes “in the can” as they say. So I would guess the first “season” will be similar. They probably won’t be able to fix things until season 2, well if there is a season 2.

  7. Yea how did she get all dressed, hair done, make up on and there so quick? Its like she was in her car down the street waiting for a phone call on her cell to show up!

  8. I am watching it now and I am laughing, they are so anti-Taps.

  9. i would love to be in contact with ryan i have had many expirences that are qiute odd and have forcasted many situations (ex. tornados as a youngster and just this past yer as wll) my intrest in these situations and the paranormal are being peeked

  10. I totally disagree with people who are stating that this show is like ghosthunters, and that its a scam.
I was bored in bed the other night and couldnt find anything to watch so i thought “oh il give this a try” sceptical myself because i really dont enjoy shows such as ghosthunters, i think its usually fake, and people are just creeping themselves out by going to stupid places in the middle of the night…Of course if you’re gunna go to a place like that, you’re gunna get freaked out, totally ridiculous.
But as soon as i put it on i thought it was different, i really actually enjoyed this, i’ve only seen 2 episodes, one of which was about the demon “babel/belial” and i couldnt believe that fact that afterwards i was so creeped out i couldnt sleep, i thought it was fantastic and do believe these people do genuinly believe in the paranormal and also genuinly want to help people.

  11. I have been watching this show and enjoying it over in the UK. I guess they are trying to sell you an old bit of rope in a new rapper. The show does at times pull this off however one episode showen living this week featured a young couple living in a converted school house tyhat kept hearing children’s voices. All very convincing until you notice that the young lady is the same paranormal investigator on ghost hunters international!!! I guess the show is fake as no reference was made to the fact the young lady was already involved in another ghost show. Shame but I guess all of these shows are just selling you what you want to believe.
