Ghost Hunters has investigated the St Augustine Lighthouse twice. Most recently airing an episode on January 9th, 2008.

Both investigations were very interesting with a lot of evidence collected. The first episode at St Augustine Lighthouse is part of Season 2. As of this writing the second episode is not available on DVD.

One of the stories about the lighthouse is of three young girls drowning. This story is true. Two of the girls were the daughters of Hezekiah Pittee. Pittee was the superintendent of construction of the tower in 1873. On the property was a rail car, handcart or some type of vehicle that went from the light station to the ocean. The workers used this vehicle to bring the supplies from the beach to the work site. On the fateful day of the drowning, something happened to this vehicle and five children went into the ocean. Workers were able to save a girl and a boy but the other three drowned and were all girls. Two of them were Pittee’s daughters and the third was a young black girl, either a servant or the daughter of a worker.

It is of this family that TAPS has believed that have captured EVPs and shadows on video.

The St Augustine Lighthouse is on our Haunted Places Ghost Paranormal Map.

St. Augustine Lighthouse Stairs

219 steps to the top! Lightkeepers used to carry a 5 gallon bucket of hot oil up the stairs every couple of hours to keep the light burning. Talk about a workout!
