Reichenstein Castle is one of the oldest in Germany. Originally built in the 12th Century.

According to local legend, Dietrich von Hohenfels and his nine sons were robber barons who used the castle as a stronghold. His sons were caught by the authorities and killed; Hohenfels was captured the next day. He asked that he be hanged and his sons’ lives be spared, but upon seeing that they were already dead, his head fell from his body. All ten bodies were buried in St. Clement Chapel, in the castle, and the ghost — headless — is said to haunt the castle.

In 2008 Reichenstein Castle was investigated by Ghost Hunters International.

You can find the Reichenstein Castle on our Haunted Places Map.

The Gate to the Castle

On the banks of the river, rises Reichenstein, one of the oldest castles on the Rhein. In the 13th century it was greatly feared as the hide-out of robber knights. It has twice been destroyed, once by the League of Rhenish Cities, and then again by the great opponent of the robbers, Emperor Rudolf von Habsburg. Reichenstein Castle was rebuilt around 1900 and now houses a significant private collection of antlers and weapons.
