The Ohio Paranormal Seekers (TOPS) are organizing a seminar for August 23, 2008. The event will occur at the Secrest Auditorium.

The ZanesvilleTimesRecorder.com has an article about TOPS and the event:

The seminar, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m., will give the audience the chance to learn more about paranormal investigations and how a paranormal team works. Tickets are $10 in advance and at the door, with doors opening at 6 p.m. TOPS investigators will be available at 6:30 for a meet and greet and photos with attendees. A question and answer session will follow the seminar, giving those attending a chance to ask questions of the investigators. In addition, TOPS will spend the night for further investigation at Secrest and offer a raffle that will give three winners the opportunity to join them for the night.

If you are in the area consider attending. If you are lucky enough to win the raffle you can go on their investigation too.

What is real time spirit communication?

It’s when a human uses an electronic device to communicate in a conversation with a spirit.

So how is it different than an EVP?

  • The spirit voice must be a response to a question or fit into the current conversation. An EVP not necessarily has to be so as it could be from a residual haunting.
  • Because it’s a conversation between human and spirit, the audio is heard live. An EVP by definition is not heard live but only found when playing back a recording.

When someone uses a “Frank’s Box” they are participating in a session in the hopes of communicating with a spirit. And if you are like us here at Spectral Review, it’s hard not to have at least heard of the thing called a “Frank’s Box.” It has not been used on Ghost Hunters but has been used on Paranormal State.

The notion of live communication with spirits is controversial to say the least.

So we thought we would get you a rundown on just what is happening in the “Real Time Spirit Communication” community. Yes there is a community of researchers dedicated to studying the use of these boxes. We will include links to example audio files that people have captured while using these electronic devices.

You have all seen it.

The lonely paranormal investigator, toiling away listening to the hours of captured audio from an investigation of a reportedly haunted location. Headphones on, intentively listening to the sounds of human voices in hopes of finding some voice that is not from a currently breathing human.

Searching for EVP is not as easy as it looks on TV.

Especially when you are a rookie. You can read and try to learn how to listen for this stuff but it’s kind of like learning to swim from a book. You really actually have to get into the water before you really learn anything.

Recently we here at Spectral Review had the opportunity to investigate the Myrtles Plantation (see our roundup of our reports including personal experiences of many who attended). Being rookies we were guided by the experienced investigators from Everyday Paranormal.

We captured 105 minutes of audio that were EVP sessions. We captured 60 minutes of audio while leaving the recorder alone in a bedroom before the investigation began, and another 60 minutes audio from a DV camcorder after the investigation ended.

The story of our experience of analyzing all this data may be informative to our readers who have never experienced an investigation and it’s aftermath. Veteran paranormal investigators who may read this article might be like Bugs Bunny and say “What an ignoramus, what a buffoon!” :)

The “People in Paranormal Research” article series has taught us that if you are interested in ghost hunting, you should read as much on the subject as possible. Nearly everyone of the investigators that have participated in the article series has told us it’s an important thing to do.

So we wanted to point out that the Buckeye State Paranormal & Haunting Investigators (BSPHI) have a real nice section on their web site containing articles and information about ghost hunting.

The articles were written by team members who have many years of experience. They have articles that cover:

Dangers of EMF fields
Introduction to the dangers associated with emf fields

A listing of helpful and some not so helpful ghost hunting gear
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get started ghost hunting.

What are orbs
Orbs: Are they just ghost farts?

How to add a constant on button to your K-II meter
The factory button is crap

EVP’s: Techniques, Grading, History, and Classification
A complete ‘how to’ from start to finish into the world of EVP’s

Please check out these other sections:

BSPHI also has a list of books that are required and suggested reading for their new members.
