Just a short walk from the home of Spectral Review is the Knox Mansion.

Knox Mansion

The Knox Mansion was built by Charles and Rose Knox, founders of the Knox Gelatin Company. Now the brand is owned by Kraft Foods but for several decades was produced locally in Johnstown, NY. The factory and R&D lab just another short walk from the Knox Mansion.

The Daily Gazette of Schenectady NY has published an article about this beautiful building.

Visitors to the mansion can’t help but feel they’ve stepped back in time, and many leave positive that they’ve spotted one of the home’s past residents. Some say they’ve seen Rose Knox roaming the house. Others have glimpsed the ghost of the gardener who worked for the Knoxes from 1905 to 1934. A picture of him hangs on the wall in the library. “I’ve had kids point to the picture and say, ‘Mom, look! That’s the guy!’ ” Quinn says.

One guest, who spent a night in the mansion, reported waking up to see a man holding a doctor’s bag standing over him.

The Knox Mansion has drawn the interest of well-known local psychics, has been featured in David J. Pitkin’s book, New York State Ghosts, and has also been studied by a paranormal investigation team.

We here at Spectral Review have visited the mansion and can say that it is like stepping back in time. Knowing the local history, the specter holding the doctor’s bag may have been a previous owner from the 1980s. This doctor died in the mansion by his own hand.

Here is a quick news item from the Sci Fi newswire explaining that Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson from the TV show Ghost Hunters are planning on getting into the haunted Bed & Breakfast business:

Hawes and Grant–who founded the Atlantic Paranormal Society, or TAPS–said they are in the process of acquiring the Spalding Inn in Whitefield, New Hampshire.

“[It] is a haunted inn, and we’re just getting ready to finalize everything on it,” Hawes said, adding, “We’re going to open it back up. It was a very well-known inn; it just needs some work, and we’re going to have to fix it up and open it back up and go from there.”

We wish them luck. I’m sure they will be quite busy with people wanting to stay at the inn. Places like the Myrtles Plantation seem to have built a nice business.

The B&B at Whitefish Point, Michigan that is a recently remodeled Coast Guard crew station is exhibiting interesting paranormal activity. There is a museum nearby that hold artifacts of shipwrecks, one of which is the Edmund Fitzgerald which was sung about by Gordon Lightfoot.

MLive.com has an article about the buildings at Whitefish Point:

“I felt someone stroking my back!” Jody says.

Most unusually, her husband tells me he glanced toward his bathroom door to see an image of a man in an old blue uniform, “like I could see it in one eye but not the other.”

“We were reading off names of those who died on the Fitzgerald, and once we got to name of the second cook, our EMS detector, which detects electromagnetic fields and fluctuations, started spiking really severely,” she said. “That’s when things started getting really interesting. Some people reported having their hair tugged, their faces being touched and arms being grabbed, but in an affectionate way. ”

The artifacts from the Edmund Fitzgerald reminds us of the Castroville Hearse, where physical objects themselves can be haunted.

The location has been investigated by the Upper Peninsula Paranormal Research Society (U.P.P.R.S.) and you can read their report from last year.

The Mount Washington Hotel

Located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Mount Washington Hotel is one of the last "Grand Hotels" left in the country. As its name suggests, Mount Washington is its backdrop. A grand masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture, The Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire's White Mountains, was a two-year labor of love for 250 master craftsmen. Conceived by industrialist Joseph Stickney, this National Historic Landmark opened in 1902 and immediately became a favorite summer haunt for poets, presidents and princes.

If you are going to be spending time on the seacoast in Rye, New Hampshire you might want to stay at the Arbor Inn. Not only will you get a great breakfast with award winning pancakes, you might also run into a ghost or two.

The Eagle Tribune has written an article about the Arbor Inn:

When guests arrive, they receive a key to their room and a map of Rye, along with restaurant suggestions and directions to attractions. But one thing they won’t get is the inn’s history of hauntings.

“We do have spiritual issues going on here,” Nichols says. Although the majority of guests never experience anything supernatural during their stays, Nichols says some have reported hearing strange noises, lights being turned on and off, misplaced objects and even being called by name. Nichols and her family have also experienced those same ghostly happenings.

“Sometimes guests will come downstairs in the morning and say, ‘Did you know you have ghosts here?’ ” Nichols said.

The next time we are in the area we will stay there. If you happen to stay at the Arbor Inn, let us know what you think!

“Ghost Hunters International” visits Nanteos Mansion and the Abbey of Lucedio in their second episode of their first season.

The Nanteos Mansion was built in 1738 by William Powell, and it remained the Powell family home for over 200 years, until the 1950s. It’s located just outside Aberystwyth, on Wales’s west coast. It’s gone under several renovations over the years but the kitchen and first floor remain mostly unchanged.

One legend associated with the property is that it once housed the Holy Grail, the chalice that Jesus and his disciples are believed to have drunk from at the Last Supper.

Nanteos Mansion is also seems to be home to a number of ghosts. Elizabeth the wife of William Powell wanders the hallways looking for her lost jewels. A phantom horse and carriage that pulls up to the front entrance in the middle of the night. The ghost of Gruffydd Evan who played for the Powell family in the music room every Christmas for 69 years. His music can be heard in the woods around the house.

Nanteos Mansion is located on our Haunted Places Map.

The Abbey of Lucedio was built in 1123 in Northern Italy. Apparently in 1684 many young girls who lived in the area met the devil. After the devil seduced them he sent them to visit the monks at Lucedio’s Abbey. The girls managed to corrupt the abbey and convert the monks to Satanism. Things went downhill after that.

Abbey of Lucedio is also located on our Haunted Places Map.

NJ.com has written about two haunted eating and drinking establishments that the New Jersey Paranormal Research (NJPR) thinks may be haunted.

One place is Arthur’s Tavern and the other is The Brass Rail.

I haven’t been to either restaurant or even to Hoboken actually. If you are in the area stop by and then tell us what you think. I have gone to haunted restaurants before and heard about stories from workers. Haunted events are rare in the first place so to have something happen while one is dining is well not likely. But working and spending a lot of time in the place one is much more likely to experience some sort of event.

This ghostly bed and breakfast was recently written up in “Michigan’s Most Haunted, A Ghostly Guide to the Great Lakes State” by Sandy Arno Lyons. The Sweet Dreams Inn was one of many places Lyons researched for the book. Lyons describes who she talked with to write her book:

“I enjoyed meeting the people (when I researched for my book),” Lyons said. “I only included stories that were given to me by reasonable, sane and sober people. These were just average, everyday people with stories to tell.”

I wonder what the “unreasonable, insane and drunk people” had to say!

How many travel editors does MSNBC need? Here is an article with 8 more haunted hotels. I haven’t stayed at any of these myself so I can’t vouch for any of the details. If you go let us know how it went!
