Haunted Map Editing Tips

It is quite simple to add “Haunted Places” on the map. If you are logged in you should see in the upper right corner over the map a “Add Haunted Location” button. Here is a screen shot:

Map with

Click on that button and a window will appear that you can use to fill out information to add your new haunted place. This window will appear and as you can see I’ve added some information into the entry fields.

You can set the latitude/longitude location in one of two ways. Just click on the map or fill out the address information and hit the “Set Coordinate By Address” button. The more info you fill in the address, the more accurate this lookup will be. If you just put a city and state you will most likely get the “center” of that city. Which is something you probably do not want.

If you really “drill down” on the map and the location you are entering can be seen from the satellite map, you can just click on the structure to also get a very accurate location. Just experiment and do what works best for you.

Setting this location is important because you cannot change it later.

The bottom section is where you are editing the description of the haunted place. Using this editor you can format the text, add images and links to other web sites. To work with this editor it’s best to:

  1. Enter your text
  2. Highlight the text you wish to “format” with your mouse
  3. Hit the format button

We will go through adding a link to a web site in a description. In the previous screen shot above you can note I entered “The Really Haunted Bed & Breakfast is really haunted. Here is a link to their web site”. So thats step one. Here is a screen shot of highlighting some text with the mouse:

Highlight text

You can see I want to change “link to their web site” into a hyperlink that someone viewing this information could click on to visit the site. Next to turn that text into a hyperlink click the “link” button that I have highlighted with a red mark. A box will pop up where you can type a URL:

URL entry

After you hit the “OK” button your description text will look like this:

URL entry

This hyperlink is not “live” now in the editor, but it will be after you add this new haunted place and it’s added on the map. This is pretty much how you go about using the formatting buttons (Bold, italic, centering etc) of your description text. Experiment with it a little and you will get the hang of it.

At anytime you can edit your haunted places that you have added to the map. Normally when you click on a “red balloon” you will get the “Google Information Window” like this:

Info Window

This is how other users will view the information you have entered for a haunted place. See the red highlighted area? The “+” button will expand the window and users will see the description you have entered. Here is a screen shot:

Expanded Info Window

If you want to edit a haunted place you have previously added to the map you first click on the “Edit” mode check box. Here is a screen shot:

Edit checkbox

If you check that box then when you click on the “red balloon”, the edit window will appear and you will be able to make changes to your description. You can change everything but the coordinate and save your changes. You will be only able to save changes to the haunted places YOU have added. This way others cannot change what you have added. The only users that have complete control are the editors at Spectral Review :)
