Product Description

Bianca wants to escape.

She's been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn't fit in.

Then she meets Lucas. He's not the "Evernight type" either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him.

"I couldn't stand it if they took it out on you," he tells Bianca, "and eventually they would."

But the connection between Bianca and Lucas can't be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed.

3 out of 5 stars "Twilight"-ish feel   January 3, 2009
When I first started reading this book, I immediately thought of "Twilight" by Stephanie Meyer. You have the same type of set up: Shy girl in new school, she meets an interesting boy, Vampires are involved. And for the first half of this book, I thought that was where the story was headed. But then Ms. Gray changes the perspective of the story, making an interesting revelation about the heroine Bianca, and at the same time throwing the reader slightly off-balance. I can't say I liked how the revelation came about, and it made the first have of the book slightly annoying, but at the end it all came together.

Also, Lucas isn't my favorite love interest for Bianca, I like Balthazar a whole lot better. In fact, I found the love between Bianca and Lucas more of first lust rather than first love. But we'll see....

Even with all that said, I liked this book and I am looking forward to the sequel. The writing was easy to read and the world easy to envision. I thought it an interesting take on the "young adult vampire love" genre. Bianca is an interesting girl, and I like the triange she finds herself in at the end of the book, between her love for Lucas and her devotion to her parents.

If you are a fan of Richelle Mead's "Vampire Academy" or the previous mentioned "Twilight" series, then I think you'll find this new series enjoyable, though try getting it at the library or wait for the paperback.

3 out of 5 stars Conventional Teen Romance   December 24, 2008
Bianca is sent to Evernight Academy by her parents after they take teaching positions at the school. While at first she seems uncomfortable in her new surroundings, and unable to fit in, she soon meets Lucas. Lucas also feels like an outcast. Together they find solace in their differentiation from the crowd of all-too-perfect fellow students.

In a current book market that seems flooded with teen vampire, spooky genre-benders, and creepy romance, there seems little new to be found here. It is nontheless an entertaining read. However, readers of PC Cast and Stephanie Meyer might find the story a tad tired out.

Furthermore, the character development seems artificial and a tad strained at times. They don't feel realistic. However I did enjoy the plot twists, and they did keep me reading until the end of the novel. I do think teens will find something to relate to in some of the characters, but overall they just felt too unrealistic to make decent connections with.

On the whole Evernight was an entertaining read, but not one of my favorite novels of the year. It was not a poor novel, it just didn't offer anything that made it stand out either.

1 out of 5 stars Why?   December 23, 2008

I picked this book up a couple of months ago, somewhat excited to read it. It sounded good, and reviews made it sound interesting.

Well it wasn't good, and it sure wasn't interesting.

I couldn't even finish this book, it was that bad. Gray was trying too hard to make the book something it wasn't.

It had potential, it just didn't reach it.

4 out of 5 stars Mysterious boarding school captures the imagination and leaves you wanting more   December 3, 2008

*No Spoilers*

Small town teenager Bianca is thrust into a strange new world when her academic parents both take teaching positions at a new boarding school, the mysterious Evernight academy. She has no choice but to go with them, putting the shy and awkward girl in the unenviable position of being the new student. Besides the Gothic and foreboding appearance Evernight is a keeper of secrets many of which were never meant to be revealed. All is not what it appears at the institution. And soon Bianca is embroiled in a battle the likes of which hasn't been seen in years.

A very good young adult vampire novel; cleverly plotted with well rounded characters. It captured me from the beginning and, although lagged slightly in the middle, held me to the finish which ended with a sort of cliffhanger (hope there's a sequel!).

Bianca is a character any teen, or adult for that matter, can identify with. Her feelings of isolation and angst run along with the theme of acceptance. Evernight is also filled with quirky characters including the deliberately androgynous Raquel and the lovable surfer dude, with questionable fashion sense, Vic. And lets not forget the obligatory swoon-worthy hero -Lucas who may or may not be who you think he is (my lips are sealed! ;0).

Assuming there are sequels coming, Gray leaves out enough to wet the appetite of the reader, especially with her ending. Many unanswered questions remain which can go in all sorts of directions and characters who could evolve -but I guess thats what series are for. :)

Another YA book delivers a solid read in the ever expanding paranormal genre.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great New Vampire Series   November 26, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Bianca's parents have taken her away from her small town to move her to Evernight Academy. Bianca can't believe her world is crumbling like this. I mean she cannot even begin to imagine what it will be like to have to make new friends, especially making friends with the snooty students at Evernight. In a failed attempt to run away Bianca meets Lucas. Lucas isn't stuck up like all the other Evernight students and he and Bianca immediately forge a friendship. While all the perfect, smart, and too good to be true students at Evernight keep getting better, Bianca finds herself getting more and more lost as the days go by. But as her relationship with Lucas strengthens, she knows that she will be able to make it through with him at her side. As things get tougher and tougher and secrets get unveiled, Bianca realizes that she will do anything for Lucas, but will it hurt her in the end?

OMG!! This is seriously one of the best books I have ever read!! I LOVED it. I was sucked in from the beginning and literally couldn't put the book down. I mean I fell asleep before I stopped reading, it was that good! I really enjoyed Bianca's character. I felt like I was able to connect with her a lot, especially because she felt so torn up about leaving the town she had known her whole life. I definitely know how it feels to leave a bunch of great friends and go somewhere where you know no one. Now the absolute greatest thing about this book is the amazing plot twist. The story was moving along just fine and then BANG the whole story changes into something even more spectacular. While there were a few hints as to what was coming, I really never expected it. You may be wondering why I'm not telling you anything about this and really it's simple, I think it would definitely put a damper on the book. I definitely recommend that you all go no RUN to the nearest bookstore and snatch up your copy before they are all gone - you will not be disappointed. As I'm sure you can imagine I am desperately anticipating the release of the next book in the series, Stargazer, which comes out at the end of the year. This book has seriously opened my eyes to a whole new area of YA books that I am so excited to dive into!
