Product Description One of the hottest new voices in paranormal romance, Shelly Laurenston knows how to do it all, delivering tales that are wickedly funny, action-packed, and scorch-your-fingers sexy. With The Mane Event, she proves just how delicious love can be once you unleash your inner beast...CHRISTMAS PRIDE How come all the good-looking ones are insane? That's what runs through NYPD cop Desiree "Dez" MacDermot's mind the minute she hooks up again with her childhood buddy, Mace Llewellyn. It isn't just the way he stares at her with those too-sexy gold eyes - as if he could devour her on the spot. Or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal bod-o-death. It isn't even that he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle. It's more about that disconcerting, shifting-from-man-to-lion thing that unhinges her - and makes her want more. Mace likes making Dez crazy. In fact, he likes her any way he can get her - in bed, on the desk, here, now, again. Together, they'd always been trouble, but Dez has no idea just how good trouble can feel...SHAW'S TAILBrendon Shaw, hotel owner and lion shifter, has seen better days. He's been beaten, had a gun to the back of his head, and had to be rescued by a Pack of shape-shifting wolves. He didn't think he'd survive the night, much less find the woman of his dreams. And he never thought the woman of his dreams would have a Tennessee accent and wear cowboy boots. Once he sets his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go. Ronnie Lee Reed is ready to change her life, and New York City is the place where any girl - even one who runs with a Pack - can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion-shifting, oh-my-what-big-um-paws-you-have men. Then again...

Two stories in one January 2, 2009 I'm surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did since there is not much plot in these stories. Mostly all sex in both stories with a small detective story thrown in. In the first story, Christmas Pride, Mace is fresh from the Navy and had hired a detective friend to find an old love interest back from when he was 14 years old. He soon meets up with said love interest, Desiree MacDermot, a NYPD detective trying to solve a murder case. Des doesn't know Mace is really a lion shapeshifter, but after Mace scares her two fierce dogs, she gets him to spill his secrets.
Shaw's Tail intertwines with Christmas Pride in that Shaw is actually one of the Pride breeding male lions from Mace's sister's pride. In the first story, Des saves Shaw from three young lion hoodlums and brings him to safety. From there in Shaw's Tail, Shaw is watched over in the hospital by one of Smitty's pack. Sparks fly, but the two have to overcome a few obstacles, first.
I thought it was very hot and perhaps not as good in the plot area, but definitely has promise.
I've never laughed so much while reading a romance novel. LOVED the humor! Unfornately, sex took over & cheapened it. January 2, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
With many synops already written, I'll make my review brief. Note: This book is comprised of two short stories by the same author.
I loved Laurenston's sense of humor. She literally had me busting up and laughing. Few authors are this much fun to read.
I was very disappointed when, half way through the first story, sex took over and everything else was drowned out. Not only were there several chapters in a row of nothing but the h/h having sex, thinking about sex, wishing they were again having sex, imagining having sex..., the language was vulgar to the point of distraction. Not once did the couple "make love" or even "have sex". It was always "f---ing". Truly, I've never seen that word used so many times in one book. After several chapters of it, I started to skim pages so I could get back to the actual story.
With Laurenston's ability to delight a reader so much with her humor, the overwhelming vulgarity and abundance of sex scenes are a waste of her talent. During the first half of the first story, I was sure I'd be coming back on Amazon to order more of her books. After the second half, I didn't even want to read the second story in this book.
Christmas Pride is great! December 17, 2008 Mace Llewellyn has two goals: open his own business with the help of a financial backer, and find a woman. He is not blindly looking for a woman; he knows who she is and she has been haunting his dreams for almost 20 years. However, from what Mace can tell, things might not work out exactly as he plans. First, he is met at the airport by a fellow Pride member. Second, his sisters have issued orders that he just doesn't want to deal with at this moment, the least of which includes the fact that he is the only breeding male of their line. Third, the woman who left him so many years ago is now a police officer and she is investigating the murder of a male Pride member which happened directly outside of Pride headquarters.
Investigating the murder of a man outside the offices of her archenemy, Desiree MacDermot comes face to face with her past. She doesn't realize that Mace is here to claim her, she just knows that she still loves him. Dez left Mace so many years ago, but not because she wanted to. Young and naive, she had been pressured into feeling unworthy of Mace by his older sisters. As a result, instead of causing Mace embarrassment, she walked away. It was a decision that Dez has regretted ever since. Coming face to face with him makes her realize that the gravely-voiced, young, skinny boy she remembers has become a living, breathing, down-home, good-looking, muscle-bound MAN. What Desiree doesn't realize is that Mace is here to claim her and he is offering her no choice in the matter.
Out of all of Shelly Laurenston's shape-shifter books/novellas, Christmas Pride is my favorite. Extremely well-written, the inner workings of the lion pride hierarchy are pretty true to life. Desiree is sassy and tough, and consequently doesn't tolerate abuse from anyone. She lives life hard, and she loves with her whole being. As for Mace, if he wasn't mated to Dez, then I would want him for myself. He may be stubborn, but he is lso totally committed and extremely loyal to his mate. This makes Mace the perfect hero in my eyes.
Take two wonderful characters, add a bit of intrigue and suspense and you have a wonderful holiday novella. would recommend Christmas Pride to anyone, whether they enjoy shape-shifters or not. This was, quite simply, an excellent read!

I have read a couple stories in this author's universe but this was the first one in the loosely-connected series. It's well-written and even with my prior knowledge, there were some surprises. It's good enough that I'll be getting more books by this author. The level of eroticism is high so I would not hand it to a younger romance reader.
What a Hot but Funny Read!! July 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved this book!! The way the author can combine the hot sex with the snorting humor is priceless. The characters were all well-rounded, extremely likable, and basically...hot as he**! I'll definitely add Ms. Laurenston to my "must have" list.
