Product Description Are ghosts really time travelers? Can the past cross into the future? Based on real-life accounts and the theories of Albert Einstein, Tan takes the mind-bending premise that time is an illusion and turns it into thought-provoking fiction. When young Ling sees a Chinese opera maiden who died tragically years before, her Uncle Wang moves into the house to research this phenomenon on the crossing of times. As he and Ling continue to investigate, an amazing story of love and revenge unfolds. But this is not the only story in this extraordinary book. A man and his wife see their daughters in wonder, knowing their girls are sequestered in a convent and forbidden to see their parents. Tang Beautiful-moon cavorts with a married man and is about to be disfigured by a gang, revenge by her wife, when a figure from another time appears and stops it. Heartbreaking, heartwarming, and infinitely moving. You'll never look at ghosts-or time-the same way again.

TWISTING TIME April 5, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This novel is extraordinary in that it develops from Einstein's concept of time, namely that the past, present and future all exist together in a four-dimensional space-time reality. What the author does is to make some characters from different times cross one another occasionally, and from this phenomenon, he generates heartbreaking and heartwarming tales, which are actually real-life and historical events. While starting from science, the author ensures that the novel is also a piece of art. Not only are the plots and the events impressively crafted, but human values are also assessed tastefully. The style of writing is so appealing and easy to read, and alliteration pervades the book. The author is no doubt a master of alliteration.
UNIQUE THEME, UNUSUAL TALES April 4, 2006 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is the first book ever published that has ghosts linked to time travel. Superstition and science are placed side by side, and the plots of the stories are realistic and touching. Both the good and bad sides of human nature are exposed in stories that cover a period of almost 100 years. While friendship, faithfulness and love are extolled; betrayal, jealousy and hatred are shown in a bad light. Although the setting of the stories is in Asia, Singapore to be specific, the human nature that the characters exhibit is universal. But not all the characters in this book are human beings. One is a dog, a very intelligent and faithful dog, and through this dog's exploits, the book conveys a strong message to readers, namely to love animals too. It is pure coincidence that this year is the year of the dog, according to the Chinese zodiac. This is a book that both the young and the old should read, and animal lovers must not give it a miss.
