 What a great start for a series November 6, 2008
At first I though that it would be a good, quick read. I was wrong in the fact that it was a great book.
Sadie Novak is a crime scene cleaner. When her brother died, she learned the hard way that Seattle has no services to clean the mess, the family has to. With this information, she starts a cleaning business so other families are not faced with this situation. Sadie also has the ability to see ghosts and tries to get them to pass over.
At her recent clean, supposedly the husband learns that his wife cheated on him, kills her then himself. But something doesn't seem right to Sadie. Especially when the ghost of the wife is trying to tell her something. Because she cannot just let it go, she starts digging into it and someone starts trying to kill her.
This is a great mystery with good turns. I cannot wait for the next book.

I did enjoy this book very much. I did NOT see the twist at the end coming at all! If you like Aunt Dimity, you'll like this book. Now, fair warning, it does give accurate descriptions of grisly death scenes, but it doesn't go all Patricia Cornwell on you.
I do agree with a couple of the reviews that thought the writing wasn't the best, but she'll improve. I actually didn't figure out the killer, but then I hardly ever do! Spoils the fun. :-)
Looking forward to the next installment.

I had picked this up as a recommendation from another mystery website. I was not disappointed. The characters were very likeable and the story kept my interest throughout. I can't wait for the next book in this series and hope that there are many more.

Oh my goodness, something new and good. This is a new look at your basic crime
novel. From the viewpoint of the person cleaning up the mess at the scene.
Oh, and by the way, she also talks to dead people. Its new and very well
written with crisp clean dialogue and an intelligent detective armed with
a mop and medical waste. I enjoyed the first book and have already
preordered the second.

Sadie cleans up the scenes of violent deaths. Sadie sees the ghosts of the people who died those violent deaths. Fortunately for Sadie, she must be at the scene of the death in order to commune with these ghosts. When Sadie meets a fortune-telling psychic who communicates with ghosts almost at will, she is at first cynical and disbelieving of Madame Maeva's talents, but when she comes to accept that Maeva is not a fraud, she feels less alone and abnormal about her own talent. I've got a feeling that Madame Maeva will be in future books.
I thought there were some serious typos in the last chapter, but they were really clues that I completely missed, and led right up to an ending that was almost a complete surprise.
In spite of the subject matter, this was a quick and easy read, and a mostly enjoyable story. The descriptions of the look and feel of the gruesome remains of violent death were a necessary part of having the reader understand what Sadie and Zack's jobs involved, and definitely belonged in the book. However, the chapter of the cleanup in the sex-toys store came off as gratuitous erotica that did nothing to advance the story for me.
