I read a lot of mysteries, and this one had its moments, but didn't keep me hooked. I think Lorna Barrett has a lot of potential, though, and I would try another of her mysteries.

This was a new author for me and I was not disappointed. It was well written and fun to read. I look forward to other books from her.

O.K. that is all I can say for this book. It just didnt manage to hold
my interest plus it seemed so unreal that the female cop is sure
Tricia who owned the bookshop killed her neighboring bookseller without
almost any reason. Just because Tricia found the body-if everyone who
found a body was sent to jail, boy crimes would be solved in a minute.
Not an especially good starter book.

I really liked the concept of this series, which is why I bought it new -- normally when I try out a new series, I buy the first book used until I'm sure I'm going to like it. However, the concept is the best thing about this debut. The story itself was a total disappointment.
I didn't care for Tricia at all, as she seemed to lack any kind of backbone, especially when it came to her sister. And Angelica may be one of the most annoying sidekicks to show up in a cozy in a long time. I found it really irritating how she suddenly became the town know-it-all within a couple of days of showing up in town, involved with everyone and everything.
I also thought the writing was really poor. People don't speak the way the author wrote the dialog. Plus, there was way too much minute detail about what people did. For example, every time a phone rang, Tricia didn't just answer it -- she picked up the receiver, put it to her ear and said, "Haven't Got A Club, Tricia speaking, how may I help you?" She didn't just drive to someone's house, she got in her car, stuck the key in the ignition, put the car in gear and stepped on the gas pedal. I don't understand why authors do this -- if Tricia gets in her car to go to someone's house, I'm smart enough to assume she turned on her car and drove it to get there. I don't need the author spelling it out for me.
I also thought the mystery was really weak, as it was evident early on who was involved and what was going on -- mainly because there really weren't any other suspects or red herrings.
I may try the second book to see if the series has improved, but I'll be buying it used.

From time to time when I need some fluff, I enjoy a good cozy mystery. Loving books, bookstores and life in a sleepy New England town, Murder is Binding, by Lorna Barrett, seemed like the perfect book for me. It is the first book in Booktown Mystery Series. I was not disappointed.
Set in fictional Stoneham, N.H., the streets in this town are lined with bookstores (my dream town). Tricia Miles is a mystery bookshop owner, who soon becomes a suspect when a fellow bookstore owner, Doris Gleason is murdered---stabbed to death and a rare cookbook is missing. Determined to clear her name, Tricia, and some other locals help her to try and clear her name.
This was a really fun cozy mystery. The book had quirky characters, was plot driven, and had me anxious to turn the pages. I can't wait for the second installment: Bookmarked for Death, scheduled to be released in February of 2009.
