This is an enjoyable read when you want to be entertained and escape for a while.
It's a story about MJ Halliday who has the ability to communicate with spirits or ghosts. Her long time best friend helped to create a business which allows her to help spirits pass on and cleanse a space. They are an entertaining duo who have a warm and entertaining friendship.
MJ is hired by Dr. Steven Sable whose grandfather was found dead with suicide as the explanation. Steven does not believe this as his grandfather did not seem depressed or upset about anything nor was he the type of man to take that action. MJ agrees to try and "speak" with his grandfather to find out what happened on the day of his death; was it suicide or murder?
While MJ is trying to reach Steven's grandfather, they begin to uncover more than they bargained for.
I found this story, the first, to be a bit choppy in places but worth the read. The second book is more smoothly written and allows the author the opportunity to draw the characters more firmly.
This is a great read if you are lounging by the pool, heading to the beach or just want to relax for an afternoon.

Okay, I love to read books. Any genre I'll give it a try, and I really do enjoy reading 1st person POV mystery series, so I decided to give this book a try, despite what I heard about this author's behavior toward reviewers that gave less than 4 or 5 star reviews for her books.
This book was not good. I would have given this 1 star, but decided on 2 stars because the author isn't a bad writer, the main character M.J. was a decent character, and her bird Doc was cute with his sayings. But other than those few positives, this book was *boring*. Really boring.
I felt it needed something more to keep my interest, and the whole premise of a "ghost hunter" that can sense ghosts and help them cross to the other side could have been executed better. There was no suspense or tension or "what happens next" feeling I usually get when I read a mystery novel. Not even during the opening scene where M.J. helps clear a house of 2 ghosts, it didn't keep me interested enough to want to keep reading, even though I made myself keep reading.LOL.
Other annoyances I had, the potential love interest of M.J., Dr. Steven Sable a foreign doctor that asks for M.J.'s help in investigating his grandfather's death. First little annoyance, what kind of name is "Steven Sable"?! Mirroring his namesake, Steven is dark in coloring, so I don't know if that was intentional on the author's part, but naming the character "Sable" seemed hokey to me.
Another annoyance was Steven's habit of asking "How do you say this?" and bungling his English to the point that M.J. has to continually correct his words. This occurred throughout the *entire* book. I found this a distraction, and unrealistic to the character. Dr. Steven Sable is described as this very handsome man, intelligent, an excellent doctor with an educated background and good upbringing behind him. Steven would speak fine and very articulate for a few paragraphs, and then out of nowhere he needs to be corrected on his English by M.J. It was jarring and didn't fit with him as he's able to understand more difficult English words for paragraphs at a time, yet suddenly, here and there he doesn't know what a "housekeeper" is, or the difference between "preferably" and "peripherally"? I don't know what the reason was behind this character flaw in Steven, the only thing I can think of was to show some type of flaw in this otherwise "perfect" man that M.J. falls for.
If you are looking for a good mystery series, you'd best look elsewhere. For a light, fun read with mystery involved try the Angi Amalfi Mysteries by Joanne Pence, Hannah Swensen mysteries by Joanne Fluke, The Southern Vampire mysteries by Charlaine Harris, or The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. The last 2 are paranormal mystery series, but a more enjoyable read than this series.

I see there are only 43 reviews and I love to read a lot of reviews before I make my decision to buy so here it goes. I was reading several other books first so I let my granddaughter read this 1st and she read it in one day. I asked her how she liked it and she said it was good{not very vocal}but a high recommend from her. I couldn't wait to get into it so I put aside another of my books I was currently reading and dug in. I also read it very fast {3days)and totally enjoyed it. This was the kind of book that holds my interest (a Ghost Whisperer fan of TV series}. I loved the characters {Gilley was my favorite}. Not so sure about Dr. Sable since usually a medical doctor's character wouldn't put you in mind of a rough and tumble smoothie like him but he suited the story line. It was a great mystery and I would not have guessed the ending. The parrot was a kick and I laughed out loud at his antics which is not my norm since I am usually so stoic. Now that I know the type of book this author writes, I want to move on to her next one.

The first irritating thing about this book is the hero's inability to speak English. The first time it happened was cute-ish. The fifth time it was annoying, the 50th time, the reader is gritting their teeth and saying, can we just get ON with it already! It might have been fine for a single book but as this is apparently going to be a recurring character, kill this character habit QUICKLY.
The second annoying thing about the book was the fact that apparently, MJ is a medium who can get every single other ghosts name on the first guess, but when it comes to solving the mystery, she's reduced to "I'm getting an "M" name". What? She can get Rita, Miguel, Larry, Lily and Max at the drop of a hat, not even a L..L..Lily? but for the entirety of the book, in the main mystery, "I'm getting an "M" name"? And of course, all the female side characters have names that begin with...you guessed it.."M". That's just cheap and sloppy writing.
Great Paranormal Investigation mystery April 23, 2008

Fiction?? Ok maybe the story line but not the investigation.. I couldn't believe how right on the book was through out. I kept thinking either this author has a psychic/medium working with her or she's a psychic/medium.
Seriously this has to be one of the best books I've read in a long time. This is only the second author to have me laughing out loud while reading the book(first being Janet Evanovich). Honestly if you don't believe in ghost then the book will appear to be hooky to you. If you believe you will enjoy the book. It's an easy read moves along nicely and throws in some unexpected laughs...
Can't wait to read the next book in the series "Demons are a Ghoul's Best Friend" I've found my new favorite Author...
