Product Description
Once Mark Riordan had a happy, ordinary life -- before a vampire attack left him changed. No longer human, but not quite vampire, Riordan now hunts the evil vamps who terrorize his city, giving in to the desires his vampire half needs to survive -- occasional blood and constant, empty sex.

Until he meets Roarke. The centuries-old vampire fills a need Riordan can't explain. Joining forces, they battle a nemesis from Roarke's past. But when the immortal Roarke sickens mysteriously, Riordan faces the ultimate question -- how much will he give up for the man he's come to love?

4 out of 5 stars Dark Callings   September 28, 2008
Dark Callings was a great book to read. It has all the gay vampire words I like to read about. It tells a great story and brings you to want to turn the page over and over again without putting it down. Riordan is half a vampire and half something between human and something else. Roarke is a very old vampire that is wise to the world for over 100 years. He falls for Riordan, whom he doesn't know what to make of, besides his deep love for him. They love each other and the lengths they go to save each other brings gay vampire erotica to its heights. Bravo!

3 out of 5 stars can be fun   April 15, 2008

If you do not expect too much this book can be fun.

Originally a series of novellas, bluntly put together under one binding, this is the usual story of a hunky human male vs/on a hunky male vampire.

Set in what look like today US the story brings us in medias res which is a fairly uncommon but proficient device.
Riordan has been hunting vampires for some time after being attacked by one, until he meets handsome and well meaning vampire Rourke who is not just good but also as sex starved as he.
From then on the story follows the growing intimacy of the two (beware, there are extremely explicit m/m sex scenes) to a fairly satisfying happy ending.

The writing is simple, the story moves forward fairly consistently and the characters are nearly believable if not a little two dimensional.
Sex scenes are not bad, especially coming from a lady-author, dialogues are simple but not too goofy.

This book can provide one with a couple of hours simple fun but do yourself a favour and buy it second-hand because it certainly is not worth its full price.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly romantic   January 2, 2008

I found this book to be right what I needed. Great fun - erotic - loads of sex and a surprising touch of tender love. Both characters are believable, well as much as a vampire and a hybrid can be; the feelings seem real, the story flows (yes, there is a story, a good one too).
I will read it again, I think

I think it was a good book. The plot transitions could have been smoother, but all in all I love where the characters ended up, and the twiast and turns that got them there. Thanks for a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, sensual and intense M/M vampire erotica, with 2 mesmerizing characters.   October 27, 2007

This was first released as a series of e-books months apart. I am very glad Changeling Press has given us the nearly complete series (minus 2 short novellas) of the mesmerizing story of Riordan and Roarke in one print paperback which I have a great time reading again. I have read quite a lot of M/M vampire eroticas and this one remains my top favorite with its intensity, raw and animalistic passion and sexually charged emotions. This print version consists of 4 novellas and one shorter one.

Riordan and Roarke are such appealing and sensual characters. They are 2 very hot alpha males, yet sensitive and vulnerable because of their love for each other. Jewell has done a marvelous job developing these two characters as the story progresses.

Riordan hunts and kills vampires, has been "half turned" by one, and now needs to appease his terrible hunger for frequent sex, interpersed with blood craving periods, in order to live. Roarke is a three centuries years old vampire, hunting vampires who kill humans, to seek redemption for past sins. They meet in one of their hunts and their lust and craving for one another is instant and intense. Their love is one emotional ride and bittersweet in the beginning. Riordan refuses to admit his love for Roarke as Riordan is a homophobe and he abhors vampires even if he has been partially changed into one. It does not help that Riordan still harbors a deep love for Melinda, his abandoned human fiancee, whom the 2 men encounter during their search for a new home to live together. The emotional interplay among these 3 characters is intense as Melinda wants Riordan back and Roarke makes no pretense that Riordan is his. The moments are poignant when Riordan nearly kills Melinda during sex as Riordan's raging sexual hunger could no longer be appeased by a mere human.

There is a short interlude midway, expressed in a sweet, no less hot, and moving tale as Riordan stop denying his feelings. They also find a new home and when they celebrate Christmas with their realtor agents, I thought it is just sad that these 2 men have no friends but only each other.

The last 2 novellas are just as explosive, sizzling erotic, intense and well written as both men race against time to find the cure for Roarke's terminal condition. Unwilling to feed on living humans, Roarke has for years been appeasing his need for blood in "non living" blood bought in plastics bags, which now has dire consequence on his body. Roarke's only cure is his grandsire's blood as the one who directly turned him centuries ago has died. Their deep love is so well expressed here. Riordan realizes nothing matters in his life except Roarke. Roarke has lived 3 centuries but is suddenly afraid to die as it means leaving Riordan behind. The last novella when they confront Roarke's grandsire and try to outplay this possibly one thousand years old vampire, is one gripping and stunning read.

Dark Callings is M/M vampire erotica at its best, the emotions powerful, the plot riveting and the sex sizzling intense and pure lust. To top it we have the mesmerizing and sensual characters of Riordan and Roarke, 2 pure alpha males in love. I am disappointed that Jewell deems their story complete. Yes, the ending is satisfying but these 2 men's story deserves more more exploration.
