Pulled Off a Good Premise December 25, 2008 This book starts with a great premise and manages to pull it off when other books would have failed miserably. A case in point would be the Accidental Witch Trilogy which usually started with a good premise and was miserable at carrying it out. This book does very well at character development, fair plot and good pacing. The romantic tension is well maintained and not juvenile, contrived or soft porn-ish. Overall a good read.
This book also has interesting twists like the main character can only see those we died naturally or at the hands of somebody else - but not suicides. And she is trying to still deal with the death of her brother in the course of this story. I liked how she eventually teams up with another psychic who sees those who have committed suicide.
The one down side was that it seemed rather obvious to the reader who the "bad guy" was fairly early and Sadie just insists it is somebody else. That got frustrating.
Wonderful Paranormal Thriller! December 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this book because I love urban fantasy but am kind of sick of all the vampire and werewolf stores that have glutted the market. I'm so glad I did! I ended up reading this book in one night and then immediately buying the next in the series -- it was that good!
Sadie, the main character, is a wonderful person you really get to know and love and you totally understand why she runs her business with such conviction! Kudos to anyone who can do this kind of job -- Wendy Roberts describes the crime scene cleaning with enough detail and sympathy that you understand how difficult a job it is and what a lifesaving service they provide to the loved ones left to deal with the aftermath of death.
Not only are the characters well written, but the story is believable and moves at lightening speed -- buyer beware, don't start at night because you'll lose sleep as you stay up late to finish it off.
What a great start for a series November 6, 2008 At first I though that it would be a good, quick read. I was wrong in the fact that it was a great book.
Sadie Novak is a crime scene cleaner. When her brother died, she learned the hard way that Seattle has no services to clean the mess, the family has to. With this information, she starts a cleaning business so other families are not faced with this situation. Sadie also has the ability to see ghosts and tries to get them to pass over.
At her recent clean, supposedly the husband learns that his wife cheated on him, kills her then himself. But something doesn't seem right to Sadie. Especially when the ghost of the wife is trying to tell her something. Because she cannot just let it go, she starts digging into it and someone starts trying to kill her.
This is a great mystery with good turns. I cannot wait for the next book.
Great first book! October 20, 2008 I did enjoy this book very much. I did NOT see the twist at the end coming at all! If you like Aunt Dimity, you'll like this book. Now, fair warning, it does give accurate descriptions of grisly death scenes, but it doesn't go all Patricia Cornwell on you.
I do agree with a couple of the reviews that thought the writing wasn't the best, but she'll improve. I actually didn't figure out the killer, but then I hardly ever do! Spoils the fun. :-)
Looking forward to the next installment.
A new author for me. September 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had picked this up as a recommendation from another mystery website. I was not disappointed. The characters were very likeable and the story kept my interest throughout. I can't wait for the next book in this series and hope that there are many more.
