Nice recorder but obsolete September 14, 2008 Olympus VN3100PC Digital Voice RecorderWhen I first got this nice little digital recorder earlier this year I was very pleased. It worked very well as described by Olympus and I had no problems connecting to my PC. But then I recently got a new PC with a Vista 64-bit operating system. That, unfortunately, made my digital recorder obsolete because Olympus does not provide driver support for 64-bit systems (as of September 2008). To make matters worse, Olympus did not even answer my request for information about future plans to provide the necessary driver. I would have given this product four stars except for this serious problem. Anyone considering getting a new PC in the near future with a 64-bit operating system should not buy this product.
Nice little recorder.... August 29, 2008 I have read the reviews and wonder why people give a bad review due to expecting more than the device says it will do. I bought this for what it is, a small easy to use recorder that is easy to download onto my computer and send WAV files or convert to smaller WMA audio e-mails or just reminders to myself or record conversations in a room. It does that wonderfully. I installed the software that came with the recorder and when I hook up the included cable to my recorder, the computer automatically opens the software and downloading the sound files could not be easier. This recorder has many features and the one I really like is voice activation, it works very well with no chopping. I was amazed at the small size of this recorder, much smaller than I imagined from the picture of it. I find the sound quality of voice recordings very good, no complaints from me. The controls are laid out very nice and I love the hold slide switch that locks in the buttons when recording, or locks out everything when the unit is off. I fail to understand how anyone could accidentally erase a file if they have the faintest understanding of how this recorder controls work, it is a multi step operation to erase a file and with the hold switch in lock position erasing is impossible. Another nice feature is the recorder remembers your settings when you change batteries IF you have the hold switch in lock position. All in all, this recorder lives up to what it says it is, and its just what I was looking for and I think it will fill the needs of the average user.
GREAT PRODUCT April 27, 2008 I WAS SURPRISED WITH THIS LITTLE RECORDER. MY WIFE USES IT TO RECORD PHONE CONVERSATIONS ON SPEAKER PHONE. IT RECORDS WELL, HAS A VERY CLEAR AND LOUD (FOR ITS SIZE)PLAYBACK. LOTS OF MEMORY AND FEATURES. HAVEN'T STORED TO COMPUTER YET BUT I WILL. A BIG PLUS... I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WANTING TO RECORD WITH USER FRIENDLY CONTROLS.
if you don't want to keep important data..get this February 20, 2008 I bought this digital recorder for school... It recorded OK, but getting and playing back the information was horrible... I had it in my backpack, and since the buttons are in the front, I even had lectures deleted [or who knows where they went? I couldn't find them !!..] I am taking Microbiology from a very fast talking, Head of the Micro Dept, and I needed all information for exams. When re-winding it, it you mistakenly pressed a wrong button,[ ie.. forward or backward, instead of 'stop'] the thing went back to the beginning of the lecture!!!. After swearing a 'blue streak', .I was ready to throw it through the window!!!. I would NEVER recommend this recorder... get it only if you don't care about what you're recording and will never have to listen to it again.!!..
Very Disappointed February 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchase this voice recorder because my son had the recorder but not the CD. I found it was not compatible with Windows Vista even though the CD said it was. I installed it on my Windows XP computer and the installation went fine, but I had other problems. It would not play 16 minutes of the beginning of a lecture my son taped at his college. I tried downloading it again and again and the first 16 minutes were still missing and once I lost more than 16 minutes of the lecture. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and it did not correct the problem. I spent 55 minutes with Olympus tech support and in the end NO ONE could figure out WHY the CD would not work with Windows Vista when it was suppose to. I called several hours later and spent another 40 minutes back on the phone when I found I could not listen to the first 16 minutes of my son's professor's lecture. Again, the end result was, NO ONE knew what the problem was or how to fix it. I am more than a little disappointed in this voice recorder and the people at Olympus. The digital recorder is going back for a refund. This is also the second Olympus voice recorder I have purchase that has not worked and it will be the last Olympus product I will ever purchase.
