1 out of 5 stars Plantronics DSP400 Headset   November 29, 2008
This product was rated High for use with Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Voice Recognition. Did not like the way they fit, folding hinge dug into scalp. Did not like the way they folded, I was not pleased at all. Headset was sold for 1/2 price to someone else. I have had several other Plantronics Products in the past and was very satisfied, this one was just not a good fit or of any use to me.

4 out of 5 stars Works great, folds up for easy storage   September 26, 2008
Purchased for use with SKYPE on a laptop. Works very well for that, plus the sound quality is fine for listening to music on the PC. The nice feature is that it can be folded to carry in a laptop bag. The USB adapter gave me some strange results, laptop's speakers continued to work, but that was probably due to my ignorance. Using the two plugs was just as easy.

3 out of 5 stars Connection method has changed   September 24, 2008
I have a DSP400 that's about 2 years old. One earphone stopped working, but I was happy enough with the unit, it's small fold up size and sound quality, to buy another one.

The new model has changed, though.

Instead of a USB connector, it has a regular 2-wire connection that plugs into an adapter, which, then, plugs into USB. While perhaps more flexible, in that the headset can be plugged into a 2-jack system without the adapter, it's an extra piece that can get lost, and I only use USB.

The new model's output is also stronger than the old one; too strong for command recognition on the Mac. Even at the lowest calibration setting, I have to speak very softly and, still, the commands are only recognized about 50% of the time. The output strength isn't adjustable on either model, unfortunately.

One other note: the USB adapter will only work with the Plantronics head set. I've tried half a dozen other headsets from as many companies. They all have an annoying hum when plugged into the adapter. Typical Plantronics!

For me, the DSP400 drops one star for the overly strong, non-adjustable microphone output, and another for the unnecessarily proprietary and easy to lose USB adapter.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent audio, decent build quality   September 17, 2008
I bought these after listening to some samples at a website that reviewed microphones for podcasting. The used the laptops built-in mic, these and several others ranging upwards of $200.

The sound quality of the sample using this headset was amazing. Background noise was practically eliminated and it had an almost studio quality to it. Reading several reviews on other sites implied that this was normal performance for this headset. The final test(s) were with recording and chatting online. Everyone I've spoken with on Skype, iChat, etc. brings up the quality of the audio heard on their end without me asking about it. The first two friends I spoke with decided they would order a set by the end of our first conversation. The recordings I've made in GarageBand and other apps have also resulted in excellent audio quality.

I was not interested in a set that used a USB "dongle" - I wanted straight USB. But this has not been a problem and means the headset can be used with other devices (such as soundcards) that have analog inputs and that other headsets with separate mic/speaker plugs can be used with the converter.

The audio quality of the headphones is better than I expected. Casual music listening or gaming works out just fine.
As others have noted, the build quality seems less durable/sturdy than a non-folding set, but it allows them to travel in tight spaces in a bag not possible if they did not fold up. That said, I'm confident they will last a long time so long as I continue to be careful and not simply throw them in with other stuff.
Overall, I am very pleased with this headset and have had no qualms about recommending them to others.

4 out of 5 stars Great Microphone   August 18, 2008
Very clear recording sound. Works well with my voice recognition software and for podcasts and skype as well. My only complaint is that the cord is too long.
