A bit dissapointed October 18, 2007 The product is exactly what I needed. Great battery life and works very well. My only problem was with Amazon. I live locally and opted for the free shipping. They scheduled me almost 2 weeks out for delivery! I waited a week and viewed my order and the time frame had changed to an additional two days. I complained to Amazon via email. I told them that I am a loyal customer and live locally and there is no reason to wait almost 3 weeks for a product that they have in stock, free shipping or not. They promptly sent my product the following day.

A couple of years ago we purchased a microcassette recorder to record board meetings for the purpose of keeping accurate minutes. The board members distribute themselves around a 20-seat table, and even in the middle of the group, the mcr only picked up the 4 members closest to it, and not clearly at that. I tried Olympus WS-320M at one end of the table, and I was thrilled to find that even the members at the far end were easily understood on the recording. It was fairly quiet, but since you can copy the recorded file to a pc I was able to turn it up even beyond the volume the recorder can reach. There was no distortion at high voume.
Not good for music recording September 19, 2007 Bought this locally to try out as a music recorder to record my daughter and son's piano recitals to get better audio to accompany the video. I intended to place the recorder on or around the piano. I tried this out at home, but audio quality was poor for this application. Only records WMA at 64Kbps using the STHQ mode. The audio had a LOT of higher frequency hiss much like an old cassette tape recorder. I could get rid of a lot of the hiss (not all) at a slight expense in audio quality using a bandstop audio filter centered around 5Khz using my video editing software, but I would rather try something else to avoid having to mess with that extra processing. In addition, there were audible compression artifacts. Didn't try it for its intended use of voice and dictation. It is a very cool unit and very compact. The display seems nice and is very legible. I had no problem making my first (and only) piano recording without even opening the directions. I didn't have any trouble with the size of the controls for the very little I used it. I'm going to take it back and try the DS-30. Based on the recoding times of that one with the equivalent memory size it looks like it might record at 128Kbps at its highest quality mode, although I cannot find that information on the Olympus website or the downloadable manual. I give it 3 stars only for my hoped for use of it as a music recorder. It could very well merit more stars when used as a voice recorder.

My company provides this DVR as standard issue to all of our field agents, we have a lot of experience with Olympus DVR's.
+ The microphone is so sensitive, you can record the voices in the room if you just leave it in your pocket. Whispers if loud enough you can hear them so can the Olympus.
+ Four surface microphones ensures coverage.
+ This DVR is so slim and easy to use, some law enforcement departments use it as a backup recorder on the undercover officer to compliment their conventional microphone.
+ The DVR supports four different modes of quality, the lowest LP is worthless, too much distortion, SP isn't much improvement. The HQ and Stereo HQ are crystal clear. HQ provides 17 1/2 hours of recording time.
+ Device can run 18 - 20 hours on a single AAA Duracell or longer with a Duracell Ultra.
+ Real time sound meter on the LCD helps you read mic sensitivity.
+ Orange backlit LCD display is easy to read while driving in day or night.
+ Easy to open and plug into a PC, USB stick and it is recognized just like any other FAT 16 memory stick.
+ Durable, dropped numerous times onto hard surfaces and has never separated from battery housing. Forgotten in pocket and flexed while sitting down without breaking.
+ Warranty service is straightforward and easy to use, whenever our employees have a malfunction or break it, Olympus has often repaired owner abuse issues w/o charge.
- Device loses time and date info if left unplugged or no battery for more than just a few minutes.
- Menu to set features has a mild learning curve, but the features rarely need to be changed when they are set.
- Lacks a real power button, have to toggle the Hold button to activate the device.
